Andy Wray began his Physio practice in 2009 focusing on the prehabilitaion and rehabilitation of athletes from all genres of sport. Located in Ripon (North Yorkshire) it sports a fully equipped Gym, Boxing/Exercise Studio, Disabled shower/changing facilities and Treatment Room.
Andy’s own dedicated approach to improving his athletic performance saw him represent his country at Rugby League with both England Schoolboys and England Universities. Andy turned professional at the age of 16 and played for eight years enjoying many club appearances with Featherstone Rovers, Batley Bulldogs, and Hunslet Hawks. Sadly due to injuries he was unable to continue playing so embarked on a Physiotherapy degree with the aim of continuing his physical connection with the sport he loved and to facilitate the adaption of his training methods to the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries.

Having previously been a physiotherapist at Featherstone Rovers RLFC and York City FC, Andy now works alongside the coaching staff at Ripon RUFC managing injuries and developing game specific training routines. Day to day he manages complex musculoskeletal injuries within the MOD at Catterick Barracks and during evenings and weekends he devotes his time to conditioning and rehabilitating athletes and developing the AVA Physiotherapy practice. With such a large amount of time spent administering his physiotherapy skills it is easy to understand why his wife Vicki, a nurse at Harrogate and District Foundation Trust, helps out at his private practice. She explains :
“Andy is very passionate about his line of work and wanted me to be as involved as much as possible. We decided that we wanted a warm and friendly environment for the clients to be treated in so I gave it ‘the womens touch’. The practice is always improving and we listen to patients requests’ in order to better the services.”

AVA Physiotherapy is dedicated to enhancing sports performance, rehabilitate the injured athlete and encourage training methods that help the individual steer clear of major traumatic injuries. It is Andy’s aim to allow all levels of sports men and women to access training methods, movement analysis and treatment modalities whilst tailoring them to the individuals needs. In Andy’s words:
“It is my objective to create confidence within the individual to meet the demands of their chosen sport. The personalised strength, stability and core control exercises I use allow the individual to reduce the physical stresses during competition therefore allowing reduced psychological pressure. It keeps me going when I see patients achieve their goals knowing I had a small part to play in their recovery or success.”

The practice was set up with the sports-person in mind yet Andy has created a warm and friendly treatment space where he is able to apply his knowledge and skills to all musculoskeletal complaints. Work ergonomics, everyday accidents and degenerate conditions all cause the public pain therefore AVA physiotherapy welcomes anyone wanting treatment, management strategies and information regarding their complaints. Fitness and strength training programs can be arranged individually or in couples and also full sports teams can be catered for. It is imperative that an individual feels comfortable and Andy understands that not everyone is able to travel, therefore on request a mobile service is offered.
